Common mistakes: House or Home?

In this post we are going to take a look at the difference between 'house' and 'home'. En esta entrada vamos a ver la diferencia entre "house" y "home".

We use house to talk about a type building in the same way we would talk about an appartment, a flat, a hut, etc. Usamos "house" (casa) para hablar de un tipo de vivienda, del mismo modo que hablaríamos de un apartamento, un piso, una cabaña, etc.

• I want to buy a new house. Quiero comprar una casa nueva.
• The house was built in the 18th century. La casa se construyó en el siglo XVIII.

We use home to talk about the place where we live and where we belong. Utilizamos "home" (casa/hogar) para hablar del lugar donde vivimos y que sentimos como nuestro. Existe un lazo afectivo entre nosotros y ese lugar.

• She left home at an early age. Se fue de casa a una edad temprana.
• Home sweet home! Hogar dulce hogar.
• Home is where the heart is. No se es de donde se nace, sino de donde se pace.
• I have been living in New York for the last 8 years, but It's time to go back home. He estado viviendo en NY durante los últimos 8 años, pero es hora de volver a casa (al país natal).
