Writing a for and against essay


A for and against essay discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a topic.
It consists of four paragraphs:
  1.  INTRODUCTION: states an opinion and grabs the reader's attention. 
  2.  ADVANTAGES: to talk about the positive aspects of the topic, supported by examples and information.
  3. DISADVANTAGES: to talk about the negative aspects of the topic, supported by examples and information.
  4. CONCLUSION: sums up our opinion and ends the statement
Take this structure taken from the book as an example. Pay special attention to the parts in bold:

The ……. is a controversial topic in my town. There are arguments for and against and everyone has a strong opinion. 

One the one hand, some people argue that…. [1st "argument for"]. They say this is good for ……. [Advantages of the first argument for] as well as …….. Furthermore, many people agree that [2nd "argument for"].

On the other hand, others believe that ……. [1st "argument against"]. Although it’s a nice idea, they argue that ……. [another solution]. Moreover, they think that …….[2nd "argument against"].

In conclusion, I think that ….. is a …. Idea because it’s [adjectives of the unit]. However, I agree that….
